On February 1, 1942, 300 mothers met in the Durant Hotel in Flint Michigan as the result of an effort by Captain George H. Maines who believed that getting these mothers organized would do a lot more for the country and our troops fighting in WWII.

On February 6th the organization was reported on Congressional record. Chapters then formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, Iowa and Washington. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during times of war. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress.

Over the years, particularly during peacetime, the number of members in the organization have dwindled but the backbone of Blue Star Mothers has remained in tact and with the War on Terror that we're fighting today there are hundreds of Chapters throughout the United States.

Local History of the Blue Star Mothers

First Meeting
It was early 2004 when many of our sons and daughters received word that they would be deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq and a few other places around the world due to the war on terror. That was the first many of us in central Oklahoma ever heard of Blue Star Mothers of America.

Five mothers from around the Oklahoma City area dove into the effort to form Chapter 6, taking on the roles of officers and working to build the chapter. On 02 April 2004, our first meeting was held at the Moore Public Library and the Blue Star Mothers, South Oklahoma City, Chapter Six was officially formed. Within a few short months Chapter 6 had grown considerably and we realized that by splitting into two Chapters we could better serve the Oklahoma City metro area.

The original Chapter 6 (working out of Moore) remained in tact to serve the communities in the South Oklahoma City area and southward. A new Chapter 8 (working out of Edmond) was formed to work with communities in the North Oklahoma City area and northward. And of course, we both answer to the Oklahoma Department.

Although we are two different chapters we have one common goal, to support our sons and daughters and U.S. troops everywhere as well as our veterans here at home. Therefore, we often work together on projects that benefit both our chapters and the troops and veterans we support.
